What is Pain Management?

Many patients assume that pain management solely focuses on medication, but this field of healthcare encompasses a wide range of care. Beyond medication there are outpatient procedures like steroid injections that can work wonders, along with an array of surgical options. Physical therapy or receiving guidance on functional fitness can also be very helpful.

First, we’ll need to pinpoint the source of your pain and its severity. In your initial appointment, your doctor will review your medical history and your current level of pain. You may also be scheduled for an imaging or diagnostic study, like an X-ray or electromyography test.

Some patients may feel that their pain is all in their head or that they should just muscle through it – but it’s very important to be open and honest with how you’re truly feeling. We know how discouraging and overwhelming any kind of pain can be, and we’ll work with you to create a personalized plan of care. Progress is possible.

Helping You Find Relief

Some of the most common pain management procedures we perform include:

  • Radiofrequency Thermocoagulation : Also known as ablation, this procedure uses a radiofrequency current to basically disconnect your affected nerves at the root, preventing them from transmitting pain signals to your brain. This can provide pain relief for up to several years and can also be repeated down the road.
  • Epidural Steroid Injections: Inflammation is a major cause of pain, and steroids work to reduce inflammation. The injection will be administered in your lower back and can help ease pain throughout your body from conditions such as herniated discs, joint cysts, or bone spurs.
  • Spinal Cord Stimulator: For patients suffering from debilitating chronic pain, a spinal cord stimulator (SCS) can bring relief and reduce the need for pain medication. This medical device is implanted under the skin and uses small electrodes to block pain signals from traveling from your spine to your brain.

In some cases, surgery may still be your best course of action. Our orthopedic specialists perform a wide range of operations, from total knee replacements to carpal tunnel release. We also offer robotic surgery for select procedures, which can help reduce pain after surgery and provide an expedited healing process.

A Comprehensive Approach

In addition to these pain management procedures, we also provide extensive physical therapy services, from our clinics to inpatient and home health settings. You may think that movement will only increase your pain. However, exercise guided by a PT can bring many benefits, like strengthening your range of motion, or reducing stress – which is connected to flare-ups of conditions such as arthritis or fibromyalgia.

For example, our Thayne clinic features a therapy pool. Aquatic therapy can be particularly helpful to patients experiencing chronic pain, as warm water can soothe your muscles, enabling you to perform exercises that might otherwise be very difficult. Whether your therapy is in a pool or on an elliptical, your sessions will be tailored to your needs and goals.

We’re committed to helping you live a full and healthy life, and that includes addressing pain head on. Contact our pain management specialists to schedule an appointment.
