It’s summertime – time to get outdoors! But beware.
Hiking, horseback riding, mowing the lawn, and even a day on the lake can result in heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Star Valley Health wants to help you avoid these potentially dangerous situations. Here are a few tips to beat the heat:
- Stay hydrated during extreme heat. Drink water even if you are not feeling thirsty. Avoid too much caffeine and alcohol, which can promote dehydration.
- Eat food that can be served cold, so you don’t have to use your oven or range.
- Check on your neighbors, family, and friends. Watch children and seniors closely, as they are especially vulnerable.
- Stay out of the sun when it is at its strongest and avoid extreme temperature changes. Evening and early morning are the best times to get out.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen.
- Watch for the signs of heat illness: headache, dizziness, muscle cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Call 911 and help cool the person until help arrives.
From all of us at Star Valley Health, have a safe and fun summer!
