
Symptoms of an Ankle Sprain
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Inability to Bear Weight
Treatment – Guided By Grade of Ankle Sprain
Most Cases Will Include:
- RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
- Anti-inflammatory Medication
- Therapy for restoring range of motion and strength
- Gradual return to normal activities
General Timing for Treatment
- First Three Days – RICE
- Up to 4-6 Weeks – Activity Modification
- Ankle is often splinted or use of CAM walking boot during this period
- Often therapy for restoring ROM is initiated between 2-4 weeks after injury
- Gradual Return to Normal Activity
When Should I get an X-ray?
Each Situation Varies, But Generally You May Need an X-Ray If:
- You Experience Bone Tenderness Along the Distal, Posterior Edge of the Tibia or Tip of the Medial Malleolus
- You Are Unable to Bear Weight Immediately & Upon Further Evaluation
