Early breast cancer detection helped save Staci Horsley’s life.

For Staci Horsley, a family history of breast cancer served as motivation to diligently schedule mammograms. “I had two grandmothers who were breast cancer survivors, and I felt it was important to do what I needed to make sure I was ok.”

After a routine mammogram at Star Valley Health, Staci was called back for another screening. That same day Staci also underwent an ultrasound and biopsy. “The techs and Dr. Veigel were just so kind and thoughtful of my situation,” reflects Staci. “They were thorough and they were honest, and it started the ball rolling.”

By the end of the week, Staci heard the word from her doctor: cancer. “I was not prepared in my mid-40s to hear that at all,” says Staci. It’s a diagnosis one could never fully prepare for. But now it was time to fight.

Staci was diagnosed with breast cancer in June of 2023. Over the next several months she received treatment at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, a process that included surgery and radiation. Like many survivors, she continues to take medication to prevent a recurrence – but Staci is cancer-free.

Staci credits her mammogram as being a key part of her survivor story, and encourages women to be proactive with their own mammograms. “Don’t mess around. Schedule it. It made all the difference for me, and it gave me a lot of options that I might not have otherwise had. I’m a year later with cancer in the rearview mirror, and I have such gratitude.”
