Prenatal care is routine, preventative health care for pregnant women. Regular check-ups throughout your pregnancy are important because they allow doctors to treat and prevent health problems that can arise during pregnancy. It also helps to promote a healthy lifestyle that benefits both the mother and her baby.
What to expect at a prenatal appointment
Depending on where you are in your pregnancy, prenatal visits can involve a number of care services. Let’s take a look at each trimester, and their typical prenatal services:
- First trimester
At your first prenatal visit, your doctor will typically calculate your due date, schedule blood tests, perform a pelvic (Pap smear), measure your height and weight, listen to your heart and lungs and take your blood pressure. They may also perform a transvaginal ultrasound to make sure the baby is in the uterus (and not in a fallopian tube) and has a heartbeat. Throughout your first trimester (weeks 1-12) you will visit your doctor every four weeks.
- Second trimester
You will continue visiting your doctor every four weeks. It is during this trimester that most women get their first glimpse of their baby and find out the gender, if you’d like. Your doctor will continue checking your height, weight and blood pressure at each visit. Between weeks 20-22, your doctor will typically perform an ultrasound to check the growth of the baby. They will check the baby’s heartbeat and spine and measure the baby’s head, abdomen, arms and legs. You will also have a glucose-screening test to check for gestational diabetes.
- Third trimester
During the third trimester prenatal visits will increase, starting with every third week to every other week to weekly, as you get closer to your due date. Your doctor will continue checking your height, weight and blood pressure at each visit. Your doctor will perform a Group B streptococcus (GBS) test and order antibiotics for the delivery room if needed.
